Stella McCartney & Frank Stella Collaborate On A Stellar Winter Collection

Published

As we approach Autumn and its unpredictable weather, we can’t help but turn the clocks in our heads forward to Winter and the blustery season ahead has a lot in store for us. Stella McCartney is catching our attention yet again with the launch of her collaborative capsule with iconic American artist Frank Stella.

The focus of this year’s party season celebrates Frank as one of the most important painters and sculptors of his generation, through the Stella by Stella collection. Reflecting women who are both creators and collectors, this season Stella McCartney is turning wardrobe staples into effortlessly wearable art. The fashion designer set out on an exploration of one of her favourite artist’s career including his presence on the New York art scene, where work is created in the day and the evening is dedicated to mixing with creatives. Envisioning the interiors of the era, the collection welcomes animal-free leather, velvet textures and an earthy feminine colour palette – with bursts of unexpected colour and print.

Highlighting the sculptural shapes of the human body, McCartney brings us exposed skin and lingerie whilst also delving into the depths of her overt but subtle signature tailoring, with slim flannel fine line suits. Capturing the masculine energy of strong shoulders and silhouettes, Stella by Stella features Striped Fur Free coats, oversized tuxedo and boxy overcoats, with the added feminine touch of fluid stretch viscose dresses – inspired by Frank’s iconic Ahab print.

But don’t fret, the duo haven’t scrimped on their formalwear with the spotlight also placed on sexy chain fringe silk dresses, a form-fitting forest-friendly lilac ribbed all-in-one and a romantic red satin dress with sweetheart neckline. If your agenda isn’t formal-centred, McCartney replicates the typical artist’s workwear uniform with functional details and rich fabrics that arrive in the form of soft flocked denim cargo trousers and jackets, skirts, contrastingly stitched polished cotton utilitarian pants and recycled polyester clip belts.

We can’t talk about a new collection and not mention accessories! The fresh Monogram Shoulder Bag has been handcrafted from an animal leather alternative, using grape waste sourced from Italian wineries. The choices continue with Chenille Logo Totes and puffy recycled nylon Frayme bags (with the fun addition of tonal chains inspired by 70s furniture).

Completing the range of newness, this season we are introduced to Stella McCartney’s most conscious sneakers to date, crafted from a mix of repurposed, recycled, bio-based materials including her grape leather alternative. Air Slides featuring puffy soles and iconic tonal chains have also been shaped from factory waste, while the vegan cowboy boots are revisited in a velvet stretch boot style.

Following the precedent set by the designer herself, 67% of the latest ready-to-wear line has been made from conscious materials. Free from animal leather, feathers and fur, we also see appearances from forest-friendly viscose, organic cotton, recycled nylon, recycled polyester and regenerative wool from traceable sources. So you can wear your wardrobe whilst being kind to the planet!
