Hayden Panettiere Has Died Aged 36 🕊️
From Claire Bennet in Heroes to Juliette Barnes in Nashville, Panettiere was part of the television many of us grew up watching.
Hayden Panettiere, the actor and singer known for Heroes, Nashville and the Scream films, has died aged 36. Her death was confirmed by her family in a statement shared by her father, Alan “Skip” Panettiere.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” he said. He described his daughter as “an incredible light and a force of nature” who brought love and joy to those who knew her and those who watched her onscreen. The family has asked for privacy as they process what it described as an “unimaginable loss”.
A cause of death has not been announced and remains under investigation. An autopsy found no signs of trauma, while the preliminary police investigation found no indication of foul play or suspicious circumstances.
For those who watched Heroes during its original run, Panettiere will be remembered as Claire Bennet, the cheerleader who discovered she could survive almost anything. The role made her famous around the world and placed her at the centre of one of television’s biggest shows.
By then, she had already spent most of her life performing. Born in Palisades, New York, in 1989, Panettiere appeared in her first commercial as a baby before taking roles in One Life to Live and Guiding Light. Her early films included Remember the Titans, Raising Helen and Ice Princess, while younger audiences also heard her as Dot in Pixar’s A Bug’s Life.
Panettiere later found one of her strongest roles in Nashville. As country singer Juliette Barnes, she played a woman whose confidence rarely told the whole story, earning two Golden Globe nominations for her performance. The series also gave Panettiere the opportunity to sing, with her recordings released across its soundtrack albums.
She brought a different energy to the Scream franchise as Kirby Reed, a clever and quick-witted character who refused to behave like an easy horror-film victim. More than a decade after appearing in Scream 4, Panettiere returned to the role in Scream VI in 2023.
Away from acting, Panettiere campaigned for the protection of whales and dolphins. Earlier this year, she also published This Is Me: A Reckoning, a memoir about growing up in public and the parts of her life audiences had not seen.
In the book, Panettiere wrote about postpartum depression, addiction and recovery, trauma and domestic abuse, choosing to tell those experiences in her own words. She had discussed postpartum depression publicly for several years, previously explaining: “I didn’t have any negative feelings towards my child. I just knew I was deeply depressed.”
Panettiere had been watched by audiences from childhood, but her memoir gave her the space to speak without a character or script. It allowed readers to hear directly from the woman behind roles that had become closely tied to the films and television programmes they grew up with.
She will be remembered for those performances, her music and her willingness to speak honestly about experiences that are still too often met with judgement. Our condolences go to her daughter, her parents and everyone who loved her. Rest in peace, Hayden. 🕊️
