Asics Go Green for World Earth Day With New Sustainable Collection

Published

Keeping activity levels high but environmental impact low, Japanese sportswear brand ASICS have launched a new collection of environmentally sustainable footwear and apparel in celebration of World Earth Day.

Crafted from 5 tons of textile waste, equivalent to 25,000 recycled t-shirts, the new Earth Day Pack is the brand’s most conscious collection following the launch of their Sunrise Reborn pack earlier this year made from recycled clothing collected in Japan. Through a circular manufacturing approach, the brand has reinvented the trainers retro textile upper with a range of recycled materials.

With style for both men and women, the Earth Day Pack includes a range of apparel and trainer silhouettes from both the performance running, court and sport style ranges including the Gel Nimbus 23, Glideride 2, Gel Resolution 8 and iconic Gel Lyte III. The collection retains the brands authentic, retro aesthetic whilst making use of sustainable and recycled materials. Taking inspiration from the natural environment and planting the seed for a brighter, more sustainable future, the shoes adopt an earthy muted colour palette representing the ground that we tread on every day. The trainers are also detailed with a small sunflower icon to represent the brand’s dedication to eco-conscious practice and paving the way for their greener future.

Each running shoe’s upper contains at least 30% recycled polyester, with some of the brand’s designs made up of 40%. Not only are the trainers crafted from recycled components but the sock lining of each shoe is made using a resource-saving technique called Solution dyeing that reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 45% and eliminates approximately a third of water consumption, avoiding harmful dyeing processes.

“Since our founding in 1949, ASICS’ purpose has been to help people achieve a sound mind in a sound body. But for that, they need a sound earth to exercise on. That’s why we’re committed to playing our part in building a circular economy that helps reduce CO2 emissions and keep global warming at less than 1.5℃. It is said that only 1% of the world’s textile waste is upcycled while over 70% of apparel ends up in landfill or incinerators. By continuing to innovate the manufacturing process across all our product categories, we can help build a circular economy and mitigate the impact of climate change.”

Yasuhito Hirota, President and COO at ASICS

Certainly, a step forward for ethical footwear and sustainable fashion, the brand has agreed to continue to use recycled polyester and the insole dying process in the rest of their trainer collections. The ASICS World Earth Day Pack will be available online and from selected retailers, with prices starting at £105. What’s more, the Skycourt and Tarther Blast will be coming soon to the collection.
