These Celebs Understood the Assignment! Here’s FROW’s Favourite Met Gala 2022 Looks…

One of fashion’s biggest annual events has once again made the headlines following Monday night’s Met Gala.

This year’s theme, “Gilded Glamour”, challenged designers to find inspiration from the late 1800s, characterised by the prosperity and wealth of the Gilded Age. However, fans of the exclusive event were left divided when some celebrities didn’t quite embrace the theme as well as others.

However, we’re here to give you a rundown on our personal favourite Met Gala outfits that we believe captured the theme perfectly. From the chic and simple to the divinely abstract, we’ve narrowed it down to our most loved looks from the night!

Jodi Turner-Smith – @metgalaofficial
Evan Mock – @metgalaofficial
Nicola Coughlan – @metgalaofficial

Jodi Turner-Smith embodied the extravagance of the Gilded Age in a glamorous Gucci gown. Modernised by its abstract pink chiffon silhouette, inspired by Victorian burlesque and the first wave of feminism in the US. The evening marked Jodi and her husband, well-respected actor, Joshua Jackson’s, Met Gala debut. It’s safe to say, the bold ensemble has left fans eager for more.

With a look that would definitely be the talk of the upper-east side, Gossip Girl’s Evan Mock commanded the attention of the Met carpet with his brightly coloured corset suit, designed by Head of State. Evan broke conventional white-tie fashion rules by taking the typically feminine, structured look and making it his own – and we are so here for it!

No stranger to the lavish and luxurious Gilded era, Nicola Coughlan wore a custom Richard Quinn dress, embroidered flower and feather details that truly embraced the meaning of the theme. Adorned with accessories, the dress was complemented with glittering Swarovski jewellery. If we were Queen Charlotte, Nicola would no doubt be our diamond of the season!

Cardi B – @theblingbag
Shawn Mendes – @shawnmendes
Madelaine Petsch – @metgalaofficial

We know we can always count on Cardi to make a fashion statement and she definitely exceeded fans’ expectations. Not only did she dazzle in her fitted Versace gown with ruching that flattered her iconic curves, she arguably made one of the most extravagant entrances of the night – turning up in a matching Versace car (we’re so jealous!).

Channelling Doctor Strange, Shawn Mendes turned up to the red steps in a Tommy Hilfiger suit, made of sustainable and upcycled materials! The navy and burgundy suit had Shawn’s initials sewn into the yellow lining, with matching nail polish and statement rings. Arriving at the Met in sustainable style is a yes from us!

Madelaine Petsch glowed on the red carpet, in her canary yellow Moschino dress which was the perfect compliment to her skin tone. Hand-embroidered with careful pleats and hand-stitched into a mermaid tail, the exaggerated puff sleeves topped off the stunning aristocratic silhouette. If the way Madelaine carried this classy look off is anything to go by, she might just be Moschino’s next golden girl!

Imaan Hammam – @amazonluxurystores
Riz Ahmed – @4designs_
Lizzo – @themetgalaofficial

In the run up to the event, fans were teased with a sneak peek of Oscar De La Renta’s design, which he described as ‘magic in the making’. The ethereal blue gown was heavily speculated about on social media, and model Imaan Hammam pulled it off. The gown featured pleated sleeves, a low back, and a long train; each decorated with dainty silver chains. This is just one of Imaan’s many striking Met Gala looks!

Riz Ahmed’s ensemble was a shoutout to all the people who worked hard through American industrialisation. The outfit, created by 4SDESIGNS, was inspired by Gilded Age workwear, taking a step back from the glitz and glamour of the era and focusing on honouring the political and social unrest that was occurring at the time.

‘It’s About Damn Time’ we talked about Lizzo and her breathtaking look! Designed by Thom Browne, the black silk outfit featured an exaggerated hip corset and dropped skirt, with an oversized ‘duchess’ coat adorned with gold roses and foliage. There was never any doubt that Lizzo would misunderstand the assignment as she took to the floor looking like a work of art – even treating people to a flute solo during her walk on the carpet! This is one moment that will go down in history.

Stormzy – @hiphopdx.uk
Normani – @metgalaofficial
Laura Harrier – @metgalaofficial

Taking to the floor in a custom three-piece Burberry tuxedo, Stormzy perfectly reflected the classic 1890s style. The piece was kept minimal and simple in silhouette to reflect the artist’s style, which he described as ’clean, classic and tailored’. Stormzy is just coming out the other side of a two-year industry break, with his long-term stylist, Melissa Holdbrook-Akposoe, claiming that the tailored piece reflects him being in his ‘transitional’ phase and making his way back into music (which we can’t wait for btw!)

Normani dazzled in a high-fashion bubble dress and matching hat. The singer looked extraordinary in the bold, black velvet Christian Siriano design, embodying a more sleek and chic look.

Laura Harrier stunned, in what some fans of the event are dubbing the “Best Dress of the Night”. The custom made H&M corseted gown was created in collaboration with designer Victor Glemaud and featured a unique twist. Underneath the dress was an original petticoat from the theme’s era.

Teyana Taylor – @teyanataylor
Quannah Chasinghorse – @metgalaofficial
Genesis Camila Suero – @genesiscamilas

‘Gilded Galaxy’ was the title of the dress Teyana Taylor wore, and to be honest, it was a refreshing take on the selected era. The Iris Van Herpen gown at first glance didn’t scream ‘Gilded Age’, however, it did in fact, feature an array of 1800’s style trends that fitted perfectly with the theme of the night. Including poufed sleeves and a cut-out bodice, the out-of-this-world look took 600 hours to create.

Inspired by her heritage, Quannah Chasinghorse was dressed by designer Prabal Gurung. The upcycled dress was made up of long blue tulle, decorated with a variety of native-inspired jewellery and eagle feathers in her hair. Quannah explained the significance behind the eagle feathers, that it signifies Native people ‘being there for one another’ and continuing her work, championing Indigenous communities by bringing the message and recognition to fashion events.

Quannah made the groundbreaking statement that she finally felt there was a place for her at the event, unlike previous years. A testament to the steps that have been taken to prioritise and see the importance inclusivity in recent years.

It’s not often a reporter steals the show from the celebs at the Met… in fact, it hasn’t happened before, until now. Met Gala fans haven’t been able to stop talking about Genesis Suero’s gorgeous dress. The Miss New York USA 2018 winner turned correspondent captured the attention of photographers when she arrived in a gold and ivory dress (that could have come right off the set of Bridgerton), rivalling some of the most exquisite high-fashion celebrity looks.

We don’t know about you but we already can’t wait for next year’s star-studded event! Check out our favourite beauty looks from the Met steps here.
