Pink: The Must-Have Colour Of The Season

Published

When you think of pink, perhaps you think of Barbie, Elle Woods, or the influence of Mean Girls and their matching outfits. Whoever it is that comes to mind, it’s likely that she is strong-willed and confident. Pink is powerful and vivacious; it is strong, romantic, and judging by the SS21 collections, it is the colour of the season.

One quick look at the SS21 collections reveals an army of pink: bubble gum, cerise, and pale rosy tones were abundant throughout the shows with Chloé, Valentino and Prada leading the way. Throughout these collections, pink was used for all shapes and silhouettes – from bohemian dresses to tailored shirts – proving the strength and adaptability of the colour.

A welcome departure from the neutral tones that have dominated our wardrobes for a while now, this move towards incorporating bright and delightful colours in our wardrobes is a sign of the times. Pink is uplifting and joyful, yet its 2021 revival proves it doesn’t have to be as coy as we were once led to believe. For brands like Alexander McQueen and Giambattista Valli, soft pink clothes were offset by thick eyeliner and chunky black lace up boots. By mixing soft pinks with dark colours and heavy makeup looks, these brands have managed to create enviable looks without crossing the line into the excessively sweet.

Whilst hot pink seems to be … well, hot, this summer, millennial pink and its paler counterparts are still popular, proving that there is a tone out there for everyone. If you’re feeling daring go straight towards the fuchsia and pair it with complementing colours such as bright orange and green, or perhaps let the pink take centre stage by pairing it with neutrals such as black and white. Alternatively, if paler pinks are more your forte, incorporate them into your outfits by using them as a replacement for your usual summer whites.
