Whilst some trends are mere fleeting moments, some have proven their staying power. Puffed sleeves are one trend that firmly sits within the latter category, having proven that they are deserving of ‘wardrobe staple’ status again and again over the past few years.
Initially brought back into our wardrobes with the 2018 revival of the 80’s – when strong-shouldered silhouettes dominating the runway – the trend has since morphed with romance at its heart, with Tudor-Esque blouse sleeves taking over during the summer months.
Perhaps we can thank Bridgerton as much as we can the likes of Loewe and Isabel Marant’s SS21 collections for keeping this trend popular. From dresses with balloon sleeves to structured blouse shoulders and everything in between, the trend is fun and flirty. Plus, now that we don’t have to wear coats everywhere (thanks, spring!) now is truly the time to let your statement sleeves shine.
Whether you want to be daring and opt for huge balloon sleeves or you want to pay homage to the trend with a little puff, there’s definitely something out there for you. Styling-wise, you could always balance the size of the sleeve with a short skirt or slim trousers, or you can channel your inner Penelope Featherington by matching your big sleeves with wide trousers or a frilly skirt.
